Geheimbericht 1
It has certainly been a while since leaving my home,
but I have traveled around various worlds and learned a lot.
Here I will record part of what I have learned.
If I recall correctly, my destiny changed when I had come
to a place where I learned the words "Master" and "Fellow Disciple".
It was at that time that I gained a new home.
Then there was the Key Sword.
What was its original purpose and who had created it?
In my training to become a Keyblade wielder,
I was told it was a guardian of the light for the sake
of secretly watching over the realm.
But is that really all it's for?
Things unrelated to my mission may be prohibited but out
of pure curiosity, I have at times traveled the realm
to gain more knowledge.
Notizen:
Xehanort is writing about the time before he became a Keyblade wielder.
He arrives at a certain location and someone decided to take him as an
apprentice. He was likely apprenticed with Eraqus at this same time and
refers to him as "brother" or "fellow disciple". Xehanort was taken from
wherever he was at the time and brought to the Land of Departure which
he refers to as his second home. Considering he did not have any known
means to leave it on his own, it is likely he was taken directly from his home world.
Considering these reports go in chronological order it would be unlikely for him
to have ever left the Land of Departure since he was a Keyblade wielder in training.
But on that same note, if BBS is to be taken literally, there is not much else
on the Land of Departure save that one castle and it would hardly make
for a good place to learn more.
That being said, Xehanort says he travels around the World, he does not
say he travels to other worlds. Considering he also uses the exact same term
for World and Realm, it is highly possible he means realm.
Geheimbericht 2
As my master has told me, when traveling the gaps between the worlds,
the body should be protected from the darkness by covering it in armor.
However, whenever I happen to use the Other Space Corridor to travel
the gaps between the worlds, I have come to notice a powerful existence
flowing into my body; as a result, I have unfortunately stopped wearing armor.
This realm is vast and countless beings reside within it.
The strange emptiness that surrounds us like a black vacuum of an ocean
is actually not in conflict with the various different worlds;
rather, the various worlds are actually swimming inside of this vacuum of an ocean.
All of those different worlds have their own sense of order.
Much like ourselves, however, they are unaware of the entirety of
this realm. As well, we cannot allow the other worlds to come to know
this fact.
Notizen:
Xehanort literally calls it "other dimension / space". The term other can also
means strange or abnormal, but I have no idea of knowing what it should actually
be; perhaps this was stated in KH2. One thing is for certain, he is talking about
the gateway the Keyblade wielders (as well as other beings such as the Nobody's)
use to travel between the worlds. He does not actually state all of this so I left
it more vague in the first translation.
Again, Xehanort uses the same word for "realm" and "world." I left it as "world"
in the first translation, but here, of all places, it is clearly meant to be "realm".
"Strange Emptiness" is the same term as "other dimension." As stated before,
other can also means "strange" but "dimension" can also mean emtpiness especially
in reference to space. In this case, I made a broad assumption that Xehanort is
actually referring to the outer space-like ocean that separates each of the worlds
from one another.
One other thing to consider is that Xehanort is writing this report while he is
still a neophate. It is entirely possible that Xehanort just doesn't understand yet
what the vast ocean of space is and so he calls it "Strange Emptiness".
Geheimbericht 3
In ancient times, when there were no gaps between the worlds,
the worlds did not hide themselves behind walls of light unlike today,
and were not protected from physically interfering with one another.
At that time, the worlds were overflowing with light,
and there were even a great number of Keyblade wielders.
However, in a world without gaps, the rush to claim the light began.
They unfortunately understood the original purpose for using a Keyblade.
Trying to make the great heart of light called Kingdom Hearts their own,
the Keyblade wielders began to wage war.
Kingdom Hearts can be considered the gathering place of hearts.
Just like the hearts of people, worlds also have hearts.
Generally, you cannot see the location of a world's heart.
Hidden within each world is a door behind which lies the heart of that world.
By gathering the hearts of all of the worlds into one,
Kingdom Hearts can be completed.
Notizen:
There is no second translation for this one since it is mostly straight
forward and hard to re-interpret.
The gaps between the worlds is in reference to the vast space that is
created between the worlds and the walls of light constructed as a result
of the war.
I had misread before which is why I didn't understand about the artificial
Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts itself, according to Xehanort, can only
be completed by gathering the hearts of the worlds.
Geheimbericht 4
The opening of the door of a complete Kingdom Hearts is
said to lead to the creation of a new realm.
That realm is something which exceeds the territory of humans.
In other words, it means the one who opened the door will also
be made into something other than human.
Light and Dark are one in the same;
there is no such thing as light without a trace of darkness.
The war started by the Keyblade wielders began to envelope
even those who were not Keyblade wielders. Various people
involved themselves in the war for various reasons but eventually
the whole world was covered in darkness.
As such, the ancient Keyblade War came to an end.
There has yet to be anyone to open the door to Kingdom Hearts.
Afterwards, the light from the few hearts which remained created
the worlds of today. In order to prevent such a conflict from occurring again
the worlds hid behind their own barriers.
Notizen:
Xehanort says that the opening of Kingdom Hearts leads to the creation of
a new world but since he uses the exact same term for world and realm, it
is entirely possibly he means it will lead to the creation of a new realm. Considering
what he says in a later report, I think that is the more likely case, but I
left it as world in the first translation.
Xehanort speaks a long run on sentence which I found hard to convey into
English. He is basically saying the Keyblade wielders started the war but
in time, even those who were not Keyblade wielders joined in for their own
reasons and ideals. In the second translation I did not bother listing every
instance he gives.
Xehanort implies that the worlds had all died out as a result of the war. The only
worlds which exist today were created by the light of the hearts that remained.
Geheimbericht 5
Currently both the Keyblade wielders and those whose bodies have fallen
to darkness can use the Corridors and travel the Realm Between.
In order to prevent the worlds from dying out like before,
the mission of the Keyblade wielders is to pass through the gaps between
the worlds to observe and protect them from the dark existence which
tries to intervene in the worlds.
Even the Keyblade wielders are currently dwindling in number.
There are at least several confirmed outside of ourselves but
in such a spacious realm, where they could have gone is unknown.
In addition to the realm we inhabit, the Realm of Light,
there is the Realm of Darkness and the realm which connects them,
the Realm Between.
Among them, the Realm of Darkness is forbidden ground.
I hear there has yet to be anyone to return from that realm.
Notizen:
As stated previously, the word used for the individual worlds and the entire
realm itself is the same word in Japanese. Since there is indeed a way they
could have distinguished between the two had they wanted to, I have left the
word as "world" for both instances in the first translation and changed it to
realm where I found it appropriate in the second translation.
As evidenced by the last report, the worlds literally died out as a result of the
Keyblade war. He says to prevent them from disappearing again, but more
specifically he means to prevent them from dying out again.
By gaps between the worlds, he means the space that has been created between
them. Each of the worlds is now a separate location within the vastness of space.
The space and barriers which separate them is the "gap between the worlds".
Geheimbericht 6
There are 3 types of Keyblades; the ones we use, the Keyblades of the
Realm of Light, the Keyblades of the Realm of Darkness, and the Keyblade
of a person's heart.
The Keyblades of the Realm of Darkness exist within the Realm of Darkness.
They are in opposition to the Keyblades of the Realm of Light which we use.
Other than the Realm from which they come, there is no difference between
these two Keyblades.
Then there is the 3rd type of Keyblade; the Keyblade of a person's heart.
This type of Keyblade was born at the time the Realm greatly changed as a
result of the war. Because of this fact, it seems as though you it is no longer
possible to get near Kingdom Hearts without one of these.
By gathering the 7 hearts of pure light you can complete the Keyblade of a
person's heart and open the door to Kingdom Hearts.
If by chance, you could open the door to Kingdom Hearts,
you could theoretically control every world and person.
Notizen:
Xehanort calls them lines of Keyblades, but the difference between line and type
is superficial at best. Again, the main difference here is changing the term "world"
into "realm" where applicable.
Xehanort literally says that because the Keyblade of a person's heart was born at
the time the realm itself was being reborn that you can no longer get close to
Kingdom Hearts without one. He does not explain why that is the case.
Geheimbericht 7
The largest unknown among the Keyblades.
Kee-Blade...a completely different Keyblade from the 3 types.
The name sounds the same but the word is written as X-Blade,
and it is only an imitation of the original.
Keyblades are created by people with the help of Kingdom Hearts itself.
However, the X-Blade is one with Kingdom Hearts.
The X-Blade is born when 2 hearts of equal strength,
one of pure light and one of pure darkness, re-combine.
The Kingdom Hearts which will appear at that time is not
an artificially constructed Kingdom Hearts but rather one
constructed of hearts of all the worlds.
That is to say, I believe this is what started the Keyblade War.
If that is the case then one only needs the X-Blade to
gather the hearts of all the worlds and complete Kingdom Hearts.
Even the barriers of separation created by the worlds will not
prevent such a thing and the Keyblade War will once again appear.
Notizen:
Xehanort literally says the X-Blade is "falsely similar" to the Keyblade.
The best term would be an imitation or counterfeit version. In either case
he is stating a negative context with that "similarity."
Keyblades are, according to Xehanort, brought into existence by people.
The existence which makes it possible for people to do this, however,
is Kingdom Hearts. The X-Blade, on the other hand, is "one in the same"
with Kingdom Hearts. It is not explained and it could mean various things
but given what he knows about the X-Blade, Xehanort likely means the
existence of the X-Blade is tied directly to the existence of Kingdom
Hearts. This is evidenced by the fact that just creating a X-Blade causes
a complete Kingdom Hearts to also appear.
This time around, I translated "intersect" as "recombine" the second time
since story context seems to imply this is closer to the term. I left it as
"intersect" in the first translation. The whole "artificially constructed"
Kingdom Hearts can also mean "man-made" but since it usually just means
"artificial" and artificial also has the common context of "man-made" I left
it as "artificial" in both cases. It does not explain what an "artificial" Kingdom
Hearts would be; but then perhaps an earlier game already did.
It took me a while but I believe Xehanort means this act is what started
the original Keyblade War. That is, the whole war started because someone
created a X-Blade and so everyone began to fight over the Kingdom Hearts
which appeared at that time. This also explains why he believes another war
will begin should the X-Blade be completed. This also seems to hold the
context that the Kingdom Hearts which appears can be maintained indefinitely.
Either that or the ancient Keyblade War was a very short one indeed.
Geheimbericht 8
My fellow pupil, Eraqus, believes that the light is something which
is absolute, but that all light has at least some darkness.
I, on the other hand, believe that an equilibrium between
light and dark is necessary to preserve the balance of the realm.
However, in a realm which has removed too much
of its darkness, the balance of this realm has been left in shambles.
Once the present state of light has fallen, the rise of darkness
will cause the need for the entire realm to be re-ordered.
After disagreeing with Eraqus on this issue, I decided to wander the realm.
I had probably finally gained the freedom I had been looking for since
leaving my home; however, having now become a Keyblade Master,
I was no longer interested in such an endeavor. Since I bear no successor
the only goal left for me to accomplish is training the next generation.
In general, Keyblade Masters take on apprentices and teach them the
ways of the Keyblade wielders; always looking to secure the next generation.
But having thrown away my own home so long ago just to walk to the end
of this path, is it really okay to just end it all like this?
Not just for that reason, I still have many things I wish to confirm with my
own eyes. Should I really just accept the end of this path quietly?
It is not hard to notice that even this body has grown quite old.
Notizen:
Eraqus believes the light is absolute but that it has some darkness to it. Xehanort,
on the other hand, believes that the light and the dark are two side of the same
coin and must remain in equal balance. This is the major disagreement which
Xehanort and Eraqus have with each other that causes them to part ways. If you
have played the game you will see a scene where Xehanort causes the scar on
Eraqus with his dark power; this is possibly the literal fight they had that caused
them to part.
When he says "a world which has removed too much of its darkness," Xehanort
is probably making a reference to the fact that the realm itself is currently the
Realm of Light while the Realm of Dark remains separate. Xehanort believes the
perfect Realm would be one of both Light and Dark in equal harmony so he is likely
stating that the Realm of Light is too unbalanced for its own good. He believes that
once the light falls, the darkness will rise and the Realm will need to be re-ordered
again just as the Realm was re-ordered due to the Keyblade War.
Geheimbericht 9
Keyblade Masters hold a special ability,
they can extract the hearts of themselves as well as other people.
Repeating this process should allow one
to remain in this world indefinitely.
As a boy, I dreamt of the boundary of this realm.
A realm no one had yet reached.
A realm no one had even seen.
The new realm that is created by opening the doors to Kingdom Hearts,
the complete realm in which Light and Dark are in equal balance.
Having gained a lot of knowledge and even a new purpose,
the only thing which remains is this aged body.
The next goal to achieve was searching for a new vessel.
That is when I met Ven and made him my apprentice.
Meeting him was destiny. I could even feel his potential,
but he is far too gentle.
I decided I could not use the frail Ven as my vessel
so I planned to use him for my other goal.
By extracting the darkness from Ven's heart, I will split him in two.
This way, the hearts of pure light and pure darkness will be complete.
Notizen:
Xehanort says that he dreamt of the end of the world. That could most
likely mean 1 of two things both of which assume he means "realm" when
he says "world". In the most likely case, he saw the farthest boundary of
the realm. In the less likely case, he literally saw the end of the realm.
Considering what he says next, it is most likely he saw the end boundary
of the realm but I left it as "end of the world" in the first translation to
keep it vague.
Xehanort says the new world created by Kingdom Hearts is a world in which
there is perfect balance between the light and the dark. Considering he says
it in the same paragraph as his dream description, it is possible he believes
this is the world he saw.
Taking into account that there is a Realm of Light and a Realm of Dark,
rather than a new world, it is more likely Xehanort is referring to the
creation of an entirely new realm; one in which both light and dark reside
in equality. I left it as world in the first translation because he does indeed
say world so it is too vague to be certain of the exact meaning.
Xehanort literally just says he wants to search for a vessel, not a new
vessel. However, considering he means another body since his current
one is too old, I simply wrote it as a "new vessel" in the second translation.
Geheimbericht 10
Just as I figured, Ven's body was not able to withstand having
his heart extracted. Although the extraction of the heart
of pure darkness, Vanitas, was a success, the process
left Ven in a comatose-like state.
The heart of pure light, Ventus.
The heart of pure darkness, Vanitas.
Raising these 2 might one day lead to the potential of completing
the X-Blade should the 2 hearts intersect.
However, Vanitas' heart of darkness was too strong.
Ven's heart is in shambles and the heart of light is about to die out.
For the sake of at least letting him die in a peaceful place
I though about where I could take him.
The first place which popped into my mind was my own hometown.
And then, my feet spontaneously began to move, and by the time I
realized it, I was already standing on a beach.
I had not once returned home since departing all those years ago,
but it had truly not changed one bit.
It was as if time stood still in this peaceful place.
I thought of all places, Ven would surely be able to rest in peace here,
however, the unconscious Ven then summoned his Keyblade.
The heart of light had not yet died out.
Notizen:
Xehanort just says that Ven is sleeping, however, since the word sleep can
also mean one from which you will not awaken, and considering the dire
tone in Xehanort's voice, it is likely he means Ven is in a coma.
It is unclear exactly what "hearts intersect" means. Considering the story
I would say it will take more than just simple contact with one another
to cause the result. Since the term can also mean genetic re-combination,
it is possible he just means they need to be re-combined. I did not translate
it this way but considering the story, this is likely what it requires.
Again, because of the dire tone in Xehanort's report, it is most likely
Ven was about to die and that Xehanort wanted to let him rest in peace.
If you have played the game you will notice that Xehanort actually leaves
Ven on Destiny Island in Ven's prologue. This basically means that Destiny
Island was Xehanort's original home. Also take into consideration that
Terra sees a young Xehanort in Riku and is told by Riku that a boy once
left Destiny Island long ago, and this fact is almost undeniable.
He says Ven held out his Keyblade but in order to hold out a Keyblade,
one must summon it to his hand so I translated it as summoned in the
second translation. The fact that he can still summon his Keyblade would
also be proof that his heart was still strong enough to live so this is
probably what he means.
Geheimbericht 11
Ventus and Vanitas.
Even now, the power of the light heart and the power
of the dark heart have yet to reach a balance; because
of which, I must raise the 2 separately.
Vanitas' darkness will consume Ven.
There is but one place suitable for raising a heart of light;
the home of Eraqus' who believes that the light is absolute.
Paying no heed to the dispute we still have,
Eraqus was overjoyed to start again and he even took
Ven under his wing quite willingly.
All I need to do now is wait for Ven's heart to grow
strong at Eraqus' place.
It had been a while since I been to my 2nd home,
and Eraqus had already raised 2 pupils of his own.
In addition, I could feel what lie dormant inside one of his pupils, Terra.
More than just being gentle, Terra was seeking power.
His attachment to power will soon cause darkness to be born within his heart.
My new vessel had been decided.
Notizen:
According to the requirements, the heart of light and the heart of
darkness must be of equal strength, so when he says the "balance"
of light and dark, he is referring to the balance of power between
Ven and Vanitas. In their present condition, Ven will merely
be consumed by Vanitas' darkness.
Xehanort doesn't just say Eraqus didn't mind the dispute they once had,
he says Eraqus didn't even mind that they still don't see eye to eye
on the subject. As a result, I said "the dispute that we still have," but
this doesn't mean they were at odds with each other, they just didn't agree
with one another on that subject.
He says literally, "Because Terra was so kind he sought power." When I read
it however, I think "more than just his kindness he sought power" so
I stated it this way in the second translation. It seems to be in contrast
to Ven who is only kind; Terra is just as kind but he also seeks power which
means he has the greater potential for darkness to be born within his heart.
Geheimbericht 12
The time has come.
I just received word of the Master Qualifier
from Eraqus.
Terra and Aqua....
Getting those two to venture out to other worlds is a simple matter,
but what about Ven...?
Vanitas can feel Ven's heart, and, according to him,
Terra is the key to Ven's heart.
Just after Ven began training, Terra gave him his wooden sword.
Since then, it seems Ven has thought of Terra as an older brother.
In other words, if any thing can effect Ven's heart, it is Terra.
First I need to isolate Terra.
With that done, Ven will grow unsettled.
In doing so, the weak light will face the darkness
in order to chase after the elder brother, Terra.
Strong darkness makes light stronger,
and strong light makes darkness stronger.
With this, everything will fall into place,
and the legend (the war) will once again return.
Notizen:
Xehanort just calls it the Master Acknowledgment but it is basically
a qualifying exam. The "acknowledgment" part is the first half
of the term, "qualifying exam." When he says "Terra and Aqua..."
he likely means that he was told Terra and Aqua would be
participating in the qualifier.
Xehanort likely means "the act of isolating Terra will make it easier
for Ven to grow restless (and consequently wish to leave the planet)."
What he says, however, is that he will isolate Terra and then instill
that uneasiness in Ven. I left it this way in the first translation but
changed it a bit in the second.
Xehanort's primary purpose here is 2 fold; first is to strengthen Ven's
heart of pure light, and second is to lure Terra out and give rise to
darkness in his heart. He says that luring out "those two" will be easy
since Aqua and Terra will travel to other worlds for missions, but it doesn't seem
like he even needs Aqua for his plans so why he should care about luring
her out is a mystery.
At the end, he is referring to the original legend he told in his reports;
that is the Keyblade war. Since in an earlier report he basically states
that he ties the completion of Kingdom Hearts with the war itself, it
is easy to conclude that by "the return of the legend", he actually means
that he will complete Kingdom Hearts and the war will return.

Bericht #13 – Xehanorts Brief
